Sizing Investigated

At age 18 I was a size 14.  Over the years I have moved occasionally down to a size 12 but even today I seem to sit at size 14.

And yet ... when I look at photos of myself in my early 20s, I was definitely thinner.
but I am happy to still be a size 14. it sounds good !

On investigation I have discovered that our waists are edging up in size. Are we fooling ourselves ? Apparently there has been "size inflation" of clothing brands sizing. A size 14 is now 10 cms (or 4 inches) wider at the waist than in the 1970s.

Waist sizes have been creeping up over the years and fashion firms, whose aim is to sell more clothes, want to keep us all happy and make us feel we are still in the same size as before.
Incidentally this is probably why the smallest size is now a size 0 instead of when I was 18 the smallest size I remember was a size 8 !

The startling increase in pattern sizes in US sizing can be seen here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanity_sizing
